Cut-to-Order Teak - sold out

Rough Sawn Teak - If you are a wood worker, you can buy whole rough boards and work them as you please.

Thick Teak - We have full sized 1 inch, 1.25, 1.5 and 2 inch thicknesses. If you really want 1 & 1/2" x 3 & 1/2", do not ask for a 2 x 4. Hardwoods are not sold the same way as lumber yard material. Please give us the actual size measurements that you want.

Wide Teak - Wide boards are rare these days. If we have any they will cost a bit more and we sell them fast. Normally anything wider than 10 inches requires gluing up. If you ask for wide teak we will quote it as joined. We offer this service and we guarantee the wood joint will be stronger than the wood itself.

Long Teak - Any teak longer than 8 feet, or thick 9 feet, will not go on FedEx ground. Shipping by a freight truck is more costly but averages out if you are buying a lot. We can get you a freight quote usually the same or next day. We do have some teak 9 to 14 feet long.

White Teak (sapwood) - We offer a discount for white teak based upon quantity. The sapwood is the outer part of the tree. It is still good wood. Read more about it here:

Teak sapwood page. It can be stained easily or left to turn silver gray in the Sun. This is an economical way to build outdoor furniture and decking, or to use as support where it is not seen on a boat. It can also be used as a substitute for Holly in teak decking.  See Picture:

Decorative Art Teak - Where the white sapwood contrasts with the golden brown heartwood it makes for beautiful picture frames, furniture accents, and other creative uses. Many people actually prefer this look and order accordingly.

See Picture:

Construction Grade Teak - This is really ungraded teak. It is cut from teak trees 15 to 30 years old. What the tree yields is what we sell - natural teak direct from a sawmill.

Marine Teak - Any teak that goes on a boat can be called marine teak. The teak we sell is not graded; it is mixed run-of-the-mill. It's not all good, but it's not all bad either.

Scrap Teak - We cut-to-order so we end up with bins and boxes full of great cut off blocks and thin edge strips. We normally consign these to a nautical thrift shop, but if you have a use for arts and crafts pieces, we offer a 10 pound box for $20.00 ($2.00/.lb), plus shipping to your Zip Code.

We sell regular teak for about $4.25 a pound. See Picture:

Teak Plugs (bungs) - These are for plugging your countersunk screw holes in furniture and boat work. We offer 3/8" plugs for 15¢ each, and 1/2" plugs for 20¢ each -only with your teak order. You can also buy these in a marine store. Our plugs are tapered so the top end goes in first. You dip them in glue, and "bung" them with a hammer, then chisel and sand them flush.

Teak  Shavings (Mulch) - We make barrels full of teak shavings every week. People bring in their garbage bags and we fill them up. This is free. Shipping is not practical and is not offered. In 30 years of woodworking, we have never thrown away sawdust or shavings. It all gets used.

See Picture:

Teak Firewood - These are the cuttings that are too small for arts and crafts use. It is not very tasty for cooking but it makes good heat and pretty flames when heating the house or for campfires. Free to visitors and locals. Shipping is not offered.

Wood Working Language - Some common words -

Bowed - The wood bends up at both ends like an archery bow or a chair rocker.

Cupped -The wood is curled up from side to side like a bowl.

Warped - The wood is bent with both ends towards one side like the edge of a boat deck.

Twisted - The wood has high spots on opposite end corners.

Bent - The wood is steamed or soaked to make it go around a curve. Like the ribs of a boat.

Pith - The soft corky center of every log is a natural occurrence in some boards. It can be filled with epoxy and sawdust or left natural, small pith cracks can be rubbed with wood glue and sanded in while wet.

Re-Saw - The wood thickness is cut again as in 2 pieces of 3/8" from a 1" thick board.

Ripped - The wood is cut lengthwise to smaller widths.

Chopped - The wood is cut crosswise to shorter lengths.

Joined - The wood is straight-lined on a jointer machine and then slots are cut to allow for hidden fasteners, then glue and clamps are set overnight to create a bond that is stronger than the wood itself. Pieces are joined to make a wider board.

Graded - An inspector sorts the wood by quality of the cuts. For big trees and big operations.

Run-of-the-Mill - The trees are cut and everything is used without sorting or grading; It's all teak - pretty much the same trees.

Staining Teak - New teak will never look like old teak, until it gets old. Teak mellows with age and exposure to sunlight and oxygen.

Staining teak is easy to do, to make repairs match sometimes we use Minwax gel-Antique Maple for an orange color, or Zar brand-Teak Natural for a nice light brownish color, or Sikkens Cetol natural teak finish. Apply the stain thinned out a little at a time until you reach a satisfactory match. As a "toning tint" use one small brush load of stain per dixie cup of clear finish for the first coat, then straight clear varnish or poly over that. For coloring a spot of sapwood, try using a Q-tip cotton swab to color just a small spot. For staining a outdoor deck you might mop it or spray it down with outdoor deck stain/sealer which comes in a few colors at your local hardware & paint store.

Teak from Costa Rica

Fresh cut 1x4 construction grade teak and

a piece of aged teak showing the color difference.

New teak will not look like old teak until it gets old; teak darkens with age.

Mahogany, cherry, walnut, and many other woods also darken with age.

The wood also has a lighter color in the growth rings around the outer edges of the tree the same as cherry, walnut and other woods do.

This lighter color sapwood;

- can be cut off

- can be stained to match

- can be left to age naturally

.

Finishing Teak - Teak can be finished in many ways or not finished and left to weather gray outside. Many old sailors do nothing. Some people oil their teak, Oil will polymerize in about 30 - 60 days (dry out). So you need to oil teak as much as you use the boat and after you soap it down. Indoor furniture is not so frequently oiled. Otherwise, yatchsmen like their teak varnished. Each coat of varnish absorbs 10% of the ultrviolet light, so you really need 10 coats or more to protect your surface, then added maintenance coats 1 - 2 times per year. (Unless the boat is covered). If you only put 3-4 coats on, your varnish will go bad, and peel up in spots, so you will need to strip and start again every year. Having a boat means it always needs maintenance; either you do, or you don't, do your teak.
